Cut bailiff use for non-payment of council tax, say charities

Councils are asked to consider vulnerable people as referrals
increase in half of all English and Welsh local authorities

The use of bailiffs to collect council tax is continuing to
increase in about half of all local authority areas in England and
Wales, despite calls by anti-poverty charities for their use to be
curtailed.

There were more than 1.4m referrals to bailiffs for the
collection of council tax last year, according to figures gathered
by the Money Advice Trust charity (MAT), which has been pressing
councils to adopt protocols aimed at protecting vulnerable
people.
